Alcester Summary

Alcester, South Dakota is a small town located in Union County, South Dakota. It is situated on the Big Sioux River, approximately 20 miles south of Sioux Falls. The town was founded in 1883 and was named after Alcester, England. As of the 2010 census, the population of Alcester was 1,093.

Geography

Alcester is located at 43°17'25"N 96°37'45"W (43.290278, -96.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2), all of it land.
The town is located on the Big Sioux River, which is a tributary of the Missouri River. The Big Sioux River is a popular destination for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.

Economy

The economy of Alcester is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a large dairy farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabrication company, and a machine shop.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,364.3 people per square mile (527.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 588.8 per square mile (227.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
