Jaconita Summary

Jaconita, New Mexico is a small unincorporated community located in Santa Fe County, New Mexico. It is situated in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, approximately 20 miles south of Santa Fe. The community is home to a diverse population of approximately 500 people, and is known for its unique blend of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo cultures.

History

Jaconita was originally inhabited by the Tewa people, a Native American tribe that lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of Europeans. The Tewa were a peaceful people who lived in small villages and farmed the land. They were known for their pottery and basketry, and their culture was heavily influenced by the nearby Pueblo Indians.
In the late 1700s, Spanish settlers began to move into the area, and the Tewa people were gradually pushed out. The Spanish established a small village in the area, which they named Jaconita. The name is derived from the Spanish word for “little house”, and it is believed to refer to the small adobe homes that the settlers built.
In the early 1800s, the area was annexed by the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The village of Jaconita was incorporated in 1876, and it quickly became a popular destination for settlers from the east. The village was home to a variety of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith, and a saloon.

Geography

Jaconita is located in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, approximately 20 miles south of Santa Fe. The area is characterized by rolling hills, lush vegetation, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers and mild winters.
