History

The town of Pope was founded in 1837, and was named after the Pope family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was originally located in the Chickasaw Nation, and was part of the Choctaw Nation after the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830. The town was incorporated in 1839, and was the first town in Pontotoc County.
In the late 19th century, Pope was a thriving agricultural community, with cotton being the main crop. The town also had a sawmill, gristmill, and a cotton gin. The town was also home to several churches, a school, and a post office.

Pope is located in northern Mississippi, in Pontotoc County. It is situated at the intersection of Mississippi Highway 6 and Mississippi Highway 15. The town is located about 10 miles south of the city of Tupelo, and about 40 miles south of the city of Memphis, Tennessee.
