Bogue Chitto CDP is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Kemper and Neshoba Counties, Mississippi. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, approximately 20 miles east of Meridian and 40 miles west of Hattiesburg. The population of Bogue Chitto CDP was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Bogue Chitto CDP is located at 32°45'25" North, 88°51'45" West (32.756944, -88.862500). It has an area of 8.3 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The area is heavily forested, with pine and hardwood trees.

History

The area that is now Bogue Chitto CDP was originally inhabited by the Choctaw Indians. The name Bogue Chitto is derived from the Choctaw phrase meaning "big creek". The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The town of Bogue Chitto was established in 1837 and was incorporated in 1848.
The town was a center of commerce and industry in the 19th century, with several sawmills, gristmills, and cotton gins. The town also had a railroad depot, which connected it to other towns in the region.
The town was destroyed by a tornado in 1908, but was quickly rebuilt. In the early 20th century, the town was a popular tourist destination, with several hotels and resorts.
