Yoder Summary

Yoder is a small town located in Reno County, Kansas, United States. It is situated on the western edge of the county, approximately 10 miles east of Hutchinson. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Yoder was founded in 1876 by a group of Mennonite settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after one of the settlers, Jacob Yoder. The settlers were attracted to the area by the availability of cheap land and the promise of religious freedom.
The town grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the early 1900s it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a bank.
In the 1920s, Yoder experienced a period of rapid growth. The town was connected to the outside world by the construction of a railroad line, and the population increased from just over 200 in 1920 to nearly 500 by 1930.

Geography

Yoder is located at 37°45'45" North, 98°2'45" West (37.7625, -98.0458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Yoder's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of wheat, corn, and other grains.
In addition to agriculture, Yoder is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The town also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 376.7 per square mile (145.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845. About 5.3% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
