History

Oskaloosa was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Osage Indians who once lived in the area. The town was incorporated in 1858 and was the county seat of Jefferson County until 1867 when it was moved to Valley Falls.
In the late 19th century, Oskaloosa was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a canning factory. The town also had a hotel, a bank, a newspaper, and several churches.
