Mahaska Summary
History
The area now known as Mahaska, Kansas was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally called “New Berlin” and was located in the northern part of the state. The town was founded in 1887 and was named after the German city of Berlin. The town was officially incorporated in 1891 and the name was changed to Mahaska, which is a Native American word meaning “beautiful”.
The town grew quickly and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a post office. The town also had a school, a church, and a newspaper.
In the 1920s, the town experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The population increased from around 500 to over 1,000. The town was home to several businesses, including a movie theater, a bowling alley, and a variety of stores.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as many of the businesses closed and the population decreased. The town was hit hard by the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. By the 1970s, the population had dropped to around 500.
In the 1980s, the town began to experience a resurgence. The population increased to over 1,000 and the town was home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
