Lebanon Summary

Lebanon, Kansas is a small town located in Smith County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Smith County.

History

Lebanon was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Lebanon, Ohio. The town was named after the Ohio town, and the first post office was established in 1872. The town was incorporated in 1876.
Lebanon was a stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and the town grew rapidly in the late 19th century. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a lumber yard, a hotel, and a bank.
In the early 20th century, Lebanon was a center of the oil industry in Kansas. The town was home to several oil refineries, and the population grew to over 1,000 by the 1920s.

Geography

Lebanon is located at (39.814, -98.837). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Lebanon is a small town with a limited economy. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town is also home to a number of oil and gas companies, which provide jobs for many of the town's residents.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 683.2 per square mile (264.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.17% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
