Larned Summary
Larned is a city located in Pawnee County, Kansas, United States. It is the county seat of Pawnee County. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 4,054.
History
Larned was founded in 1874 and named after Colonel James Larned, a prominent figure in the early history of the area. The city was incorporated in 1875.
Larned was a stop on the Santa Fe Trail, and the site of Fort Larned, an important military post from 1859 to 1878. The fort was established to protect travelers on the Santa Fe Trail and to guard the Kiowa and Comanche lands. The fort was abandoned in 1878, but the site is now a National Historic Site.
Geography
Larned is located at 38°9'25" North, 99°7'25" West (38.156944, -99.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Larned is largely based on agriculture and related industries. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a variety of restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,054 people, 1,619 households, and 1,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,845.2 people per square mile (715.2/km2). There were 1,845 housing units at an average density of 830.2 per square mile (320.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,619 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 31.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,813. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,917 for females.
