Horton is a city located in Brown County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brown County.

History

Horton was founded in 1857 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the first settler, John Horton. The town was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Horton was a major stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area, and the town grew rapidly.

Geography

Horton is located at 39°45'25" North, 95°25'17" West (39.756944, -95.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Horton is a small rural community with a diverse economy. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank. The city also has a small industrial park, which is home to several manufacturing companies.

There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.98.
