Goessel Summary
Goessel is a small city located in Marion County, Kansas, United States. It is situated in the heart of the Great Plains, approximately 30 miles north of Wichita. The city has a population of 1,195 as of the 2010 census.
History
Goessel was founded in 1876 by Mennonite immigrants from Russia. The city was named after the Mennonite leader, Elder John Goessel. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1874 and began to build homes and businesses. The first post office was established in 1876 and the first school was built in 1877.
The city was incorporated in 1887 and the first mayor was elected in 1888. The first newspaper, The Goessel News, was established in 1889. The city was a major center for Mennonite culture and religion in the early years.
Geography
Goessel is located at 38°25'17" North, 97°14'17" West (38.4214, -97.2381). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Goessel is a small rural community with a strong agricultural base. The city is home to several businesses, including a grain elevator, a feed mill, a lumber yard, a hardware store, and a grocery store. The city also has a bank, a post office, and a library.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,195 people, 463 households, and 315 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,717.1 people per square mile (662.3/km2). There were 517 housing units at an average density of 741.4 per square mile (286.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 463 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
