Cedar Vale Summary
Cedar Vale is a small town located in Chautauqua County, Kansas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Chautauqua-Elk County line, and is the only incorporated town in Chautauqua County.
History
Cedar Vale was founded in 1879 by a group of settlers from Cedar County, Iowa. The town was named after the cedar trees that grew in the area. The first post office was established in 1881.
In 1883, the town was incorporated and a school was built. The town grew slowly, but by the early 1900s, it had a population of over 500.
Geography
Cedar Vale is located at 37°14'17" North, 96°17'45" West (37.238, -96.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Cedar Vale's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 381.2 per square mile (147.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.26% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,000 for females.
