Americus Summary

Americus, Kansas is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state, in the Flint Hills region. It is situated in Lyon County, and is part of the Emporia Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1871, and was named after the Latin word for “America”. As of the 2010 census, the population of Americus was 545.

Geography

Americus is located at 38°25'25" North, 96°14'17" West (38.423607, -96.237945). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Americus is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for cattle and crop farming. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
