Altamont was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the nearby Altamont Creek, which was named after the town of Altamont, Ohio. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its fertile soil and abundant natural resources. The town quickly grew and by 1875, it had a population of over 500 people.
The town was incorporated in 1876 and the first mayor was elected in 1877. The town quickly developed into a thriving agricultural center, with a variety of crops being grown in the area.
