White Signal Summary
White Signal is a small unincorporated community located in the western part of Catron County, New Mexico. It is situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 180 and New Mexico State Road 78, approximately 25 miles east of the Arizona border. The community is located in the Chihuahuan Desert and is surrounded by the Gila National Forest. White Signal is home to approximately 200 people and is the only settlement in the area.
History
White Signal was established in the late 1800s as a stagecoach stop along the route between Lordsburg, New Mexico and Silver City, New Mexico. The town was named after the white signal flags that were used to alert travelers of the stagecoach stop. The town was also a popular stop for travelers on the Southern Pacific Railroad.
In the early 1900s, White Signal was a bustling community with a post office, a general store, a saloon, a hotel, and a school. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, and a barber shop.
In the mid-1900s, White Signal began to decline as the railroad and stagecoach routes were replaced by automobiles. The post office closed in the 1950s and the school closed in the 1960s. By the 1970s, the town had become a virtual ghost town.
Geography
White Signal is located in the Chihuahuan Desert at an elevation of 4,800 feet. The town is surrounded by the Gila National Forest and is located approximately 25 miles east of the Arizona border. The climate is arid and hot, with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer months.
