Valley Center Summary
Valley Center is a city located in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. It is a suburb of Wichita and is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 4,844.
History
Valley Center was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named for its location in the center of the valley of the Little Arkansas River. The first post office in Valley Center was established in 1872.
In 1887, the Valley Center School District was established. The first schoolhouse was built in 1888 and the first high school was built in 1895.
In the early 1900s, Valley Center was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a flour mill, a creamery, a lumber yard, a blacksmith shop, and several other businesses.
Geography
Valley Center is located at 37°50'25" North, 97°30'17" West (37.840278, -97.504722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Valley Center is a bedroom community of Wichita, and the majority of its residents commute to Wichita for work. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and several restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,844 people, 1,845 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,154.3 people per square mile (446.3/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 463.3 per square mile (179.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
