Mission Summary

Mission, Kansas is a city located in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The population was 10,323 at the 2010 census.

History

Mission was founded in 1827 by French-Canadian fur traders. The town was named after the Mission of St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit mission in the area. The town was incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Mission was a popular destination for wealthy Kansas City residents who wanted to escape the city. The town was known for its large estates and beautiful gardens.
In the 1950s, Mission began to experience rapid growth as the city of Kansas City, Missouri, expanded. The city was annexed by Kansas City in 1957.

Geography

Mission is located at 39°02'45" North, 94°37'45" West (39.04583, -94.62917). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Mission is home to several large employers, including Hallmark Cards, Sprint, and the University of Kansas Medical Center. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several shopping centers and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 10,323 people, 4,093 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,255.3 people per square mile (485.2/km2). There were 4,521 housing units at an average density of 552.3 per square mile (213.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,902, and the median income for a family was $60,902. Males had a median income of $41,902 versus $31,902 for females.
