Merriam Summary
Merriam, Kansas is a city located in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The population was 11,003 at the 2010 census.
History
Merriam was founded in the late 19th century by settlers from the East Coast. The city was named after Merriam Park, which was named after Charles Merriam, a prominent local businessman. The city was incorporated in 1950.
Geography
Merriam is located at 39°02'25" North, 94°40'17" West (39.040278, -94.671389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Merriam is home to several businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Kansas City Chiefs football team.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,003 people, 4,541 households, and 2,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,619.2 people per square mile (1,009.2/km2). There were 4,845 housing units at an average density of 1,156.2 per square mile (446.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $32,813 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
