McCune Summary

Mccune is a small city located in Crawford County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburg, KS Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Mccune was founded in 1887 by William Mccune, a local farmer. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1891. The first post office was established in 1887.
Mccune was a thriving agricultural community in the early 1900s. The town had a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a general store, a drug store, a hardware store, a lumber yard, a grain elevator, a creamery, a feed mill, a barber shop, a newspaper, and a telephone exchange.
The town was also home to a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church, the Christian Church, and the Catholic Church.

Geography

Mccune is located at 37°45'17" North, 94°51'45" West (37.754722, -94.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Mccune is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are agriculture and tourism. The town is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,743.2 people per square mile (673.2/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 756.2 per square mile (292.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
