Seaford Summary
Seaford is a city located in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. It is the largest city in the county and is located on the Nanticoke River. The population was 6,928 at the 2010 census, an increase of nearly 10% since 2000.
Geography
Seaford is located at 38°38'45" North, 75°37'45" West (38.6459, -75.6293). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which, 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
History
The area that is now Seaford was first settled in the early 1700s by English colonists. The town was originally known as Broad Creek, and was renamed Seaford in 1869. The town was incorporated in 1882.
Seaford was an important port on the Nanticoke River in the 19th century, and was a major center for the production of lumber and other wood products. The town was also home to a number of shipbuilding yards.

The city is home to the Nanticoke Health Services, a hospital and medical center. The hospital is the largest employer in the city, with over 1,000 employees.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 6,928 people, 2,845 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,364.2 people per square mile (526.7/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 605.7 per square mile (233.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 19.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
