Pike Creek Summary
Pike Creek is a census-designated place (CDP) located in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census. It is located in the northern part of the county, just south of the Pennsylvania border.
Geography
Pike Creek is located at 39°44'17" North, 75°41'17" West (39.738125, -75.688133). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
History
Pike Creek was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of Quakers from Pennsylvania. The area was originally known as "Pike's Creek" after the creek that runs through the area. The creek was named after a Revolutionary War soldier, Colonel Zebulon Pike. The area was primarily agricultural until the 1950s when suburban development began to take hold.
Economy
Pike Creek is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several corporate offices, including those of AstraZeneca, Bank of America, and JPMorgan Chase.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 8,845 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,097.3 people per square mile (808.7/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 937.2 per square mile (361.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 21.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 31.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $68,945, and the median income for a family was $80,945. Males had a median income of $51,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $33,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.
