Millsboro Summary

Millsboro is a town located in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. The population was 3,877 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Millsboro was founded in 1794 by John Mills, a Quaker from Pennsylvania. Mills purchased a large tract of land in the area and began to develop it. He built a grist mill, a saw mill, and a store. The town was originally known as Mill's Borough, but the name was eventually shortened to Millsboro.
The town grew slowly over the years, but it was not until the 1950s that it began to experience significant growth. This was due to the development of the nearby beaches and the growth of the poultry industry in the area.

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,877 people, 1,541 households, and 1,039 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,764.1 people per square mile (680.3/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 776.3 per square mile (300.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 15.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.7 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $41,964 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,945.
