Laurel Summary

Laurel is a town located in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. It is located on the Nanticoke River, about 8 miles (13 km) east of Seaford. The population was 3,708 at the 2010 census, an increase of 11.3% over the previous decade.

Geography

Laurel is located at 38°37′N 75°35′W (38.619, -75.588). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

History

Laurel was founded in 1781 by a group of Quakers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the laurel bushes that grew in the area. The town was incorporated in 1883.
In the late 19th century, Laurel was a major center of the lumber industry. The town was also home to a number of other industries, including a cannery, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.

Economy

Today, Laurel is a small town with a population of just over 3,700. The town is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
