Dover Base Housing is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Kent County, Delaware. It is part of the Dover Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located just south of the city of Dover. The population of Dover Base Housing was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Dover Base Housing was originally established in the 1940s as a housing area for military personnel stationed at Dover Air Force Base. The base was established in 1941 and was used as a training facility for the United States Army Air Corps. During World War II, the base was used as a staging area for the deployment of troops and equipment to Europe. After the war, the base was used as a Strategic Air Command base and was home to the 436th Troop Carrier Wing. In the 1950s, the base was used as a training facility for the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.
In the 1960s, the base was used as a staging area for the Vietnam War. During this time, the base was home to the 436th Tactical Airlift Wing and the 436th Tactical Fighter Wing. In the 1970s, the base was used as a training facility for the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard. In the 1980s, the base was used as a staging area for the Persian Gulf War.
In the 1990s, the base was used as a staging area for Operation Desert Storm. In the 2000s, the base was used as a staging area for Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2010, the base was closed and the housing area was converted into a residential community.

Geography

Dover Base Housing is located at 39°09'45" North, 75°31'45" West (39.1625, -75.5292). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Dover Base Housing is primarily a residential community. The economy of the area is largely based on the service industry, with many residents employed in retail, hospitality, and healthcare. There are also a number of small businesses located in the area.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,420.8 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 717 housing units at an average density of 551.5 per square mile (212.9/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 73.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
