Delaware City Summary

Delaware City is a small town located in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. It is situated on the Delaware River, about 7 miles (11 km) south of Wilmington. The population was 1,695 at the 2010 census.

History

Delaware City was founded in 1826 by William Penn, who named it after the Delaware River. The town was originally a port for the shipping of coal and other goods. In 1837, the Delaware and Chesapeake Canal was built, connecting the Delaware River to the Chesapeake Bay. This made Delaware City an important port for the shipping of goods between the two bodies of water.
In the late 19th century, Delaware City became a popular tourist destination, with many hotels and resorts being built along the waterfront. The town was also home to a number of industries, including a shipbuilding yard, a glass factory, and a brickyard.
In the early 20th century, Delaware City experienced a period of decline. The canal was closed in 1929, and the shipbuilding yard and other industries closed in the 1950s. The town was revitalized in the 1970s, when it became a popular destination for recreational boaters.

Delaware City is located at 39°33′N 75°33′W (39.55, -75.55). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

The racial makeup of the town was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 24.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $54,375. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $25,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
