History

Cheswold was first settled in the late 1600s by English settlers. The town was originally known as "Cheswold Hundred" and was part of the Dover Hundred. The town was officially incorporated in 1883.

Geography

Cheswold is located at 39°14'17" North, 75°33'45" West (39.238, -75.5625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Cheswold is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a gas station, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,717 people, 645 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 567.2 per square mile (219.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.17% White, 15.90% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.45% from other races, and 2.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.45% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
