White Hall Summary

White Hall is a small town located in Lowndes County, Alabama. It is situated on the banks of the Tombigbee River, about 20 miles south of Montgomery. The town was founded in 1820 and named after the white-painted hall of the local Methodist church. The population of White Hall was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

White Hall is located at 32°20'45" North, 86°37'45" West (32.3458, -86.6294). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 498 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km²). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 654.2 per square mile (253.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 57.45% White, 41.17% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 717 households out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $22,917, and the median income for a family was $27,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the town was $12,917. About 24.2% of families and 28.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 37.2% of those under age 18 and 24.2% of those age 65 or over.

White Hall’s economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a small industrial park, which is home to a few small manufacturing companies.
White Hall is also home to the White Hall Country Club, which offers golf, tennis, and swimming. The club also hosts several events throughout the year, including weddings and other special occasions.
