Shorter is located at 32°25'25" North, 85°25'25" West (32.423, -85.423). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
History
Shorter was founded in 1883 by the Central of Georgia Railroad. The town was named after William Shorter, a prominent railroad official. The town was incorporated in 1887.

The economy of Shorter is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including the Shorter Family Farm, which produces cotton, corn, and soybeans. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 617.2 per square mile (238.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 57.2% White, 40.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,000, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females.
