Pelham Summary
Pelham, Alabama is a city located in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. It is a suburb of Birmingham and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 21,352 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Pelham is located at 33°20'25" North, 86°47'17" West (33.340278, -86.788194). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.6 km2), of which 24.1 square miles (62.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
History
Pelham was founded in 1887 by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The town was named after Pelham, Georgia, the hometown of the railroad's president. The town was incorporated in 1947.
Economy
Pelham is home to several large employers, including the Honda Manufacturing of Alabama plant, which produces the Honda Odyssey minivan and the Honda Pilot SUV. Other major employers include the Shelby County Board of Education, the City of Pelham, and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 21,352 people, 8,072 households, and 5,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 886.2 people per square mile (342.2/km2). There were 8,717 housing units at an average density of 361.7 per square mile (139.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 8,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,845. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
