Linden Summary

Linden, Alabama is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Marengo County. It is situated on the banks of the Tombigbee River, approximately 20 miles north of the Mississippi state line. The town was founded in 1820 and is the county seat of Marengo County. The population of Linden was 2,123 in the 2010 census.

Geography

Linden is located at 32°45'25"N 88°10'45"W (32.7569, -88.1792). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
The town is situated on the banks of the Tombigbee River, which is a tributary of the Mobile River. The Tombigbee River is a major waterway in the region, and is used for recreational activities such as fishing and boating.

Economy

The economy of Linden is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several large timber companies, including Weyerhaeuser and International Paper. The timber industry is the largest employer in the area, and provides jobs for many of the town's residents.
In addition to the timber industry, Linden is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers. The town also has a small manufacturing sector, which produces a variety of products, including furniture, clothing, and food products.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,123 people, 845 households, and 545 families residing in the town. The population density was 962.2 people per square mile (371.3/km2). There were 945 housing units at an average density of 427.3 per square mile (164.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.2% White, 29.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.
