Plains, Alabama is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state, in the heart of the Wiregrass region. It is situated in the southeastern corner of Houston County, and is bordered by the cities of Dothan, Ozark, and Enterprise. The town was founded in 1883 and was named after the nearby Plains of Dothan. The population of Plains was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Plains was originally inhabited by the Creek Indians. The Creek Indians were forced to cede their land to the United States in the Treaty of Fort Jackson in 1814. The land was then opened up to white settlers in 1821. The first settlers in the area were the families of William and John Hinson, who arrived in 1821. The Hinsons built a log cabin and began farming the land.
The town of Plains was founded in 1883 by the Alabama and Florida Railroad. The railroad was built to connect the cities of Dothan and Ozark. The town was named after the nearby Plains of Dothan. The town quickly grew and by 1890, it had a population of over 500.

Plains is located at 31°17'25" North, 85°30'45" West (31.290278, -85.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

The economy of Plains is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several large farms, including the Hinson Farm, which is one of the oldest farms in the area. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,420.8 people per square mile (548.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
