Homewood Summary

Homewood, Alabama is a city located in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is a suburb of Birmingham and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Homewood was 25,167.

History

Homewood was founded in 1929 by the merger of two small towns, Rosedale and Edgewood. The town was named after the Homewood Estate, a large plantation that was owned by the family of William Rufus King, who served as Vice President of the United States under President Franklin Pierce.
The town was incorporated in 1930 and has since grown to become one of the most affluent suburbs of Birmingham. In the 1950s, Homewood experienced a period of rapid growth, as many people moved to the area to take advantage of the city’s excellent schools and convenient location.

Geography

Homewood is located at 33°28′N 86°48′W (33.47, -86.80). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Homewood is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including Brookwood Medical Center, Samford University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 25,167 people, 10,845 households, and 6,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,093.3 people per square mile (1,193.2/km2). There were 11,845 housing units at an average density of 1,457.2 per square mile (563.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 15.2% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. 3.3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $68,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.
