The city is located approximately halfway between Birmingham and Montgomery, and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. History

Clanton was founded in 1868 and named after General James H. Clanton, a Confederate officer who served in the Civil War. The city was incorporated in 1873 and was the first county seat of Chilton County. The city was originally located on the east side of the Chilton County Courthouse Square, but was moved to the west side in 1883.

Geography

Clanton is located at 32°50'25" North, 86°37'17" West (32.840278, -86.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

Economy

Clanton is a major agricultural center in the state of Alabama. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, including Tyson Foods, Pilgrim's Pride, and Wayne Farms. The city is also home to several automotive suppliers, including Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, which produces the Honda Odyssey minivan.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,619 people, 3,521 households, and 2,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,053.7 people per square mile (406.9/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 481.7 per square mile (185.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.7% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. 2.2% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,521 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
