St. Clair County Summary

St. Clair County is located in the northeastern corner of the state of Alabama, and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman Combined Statistical Area. The county was established in 1818 and named after General Arthur St. Clair, a Revolutionary War hero. The county seat is Ashville, and the largest city is Pell City. Geography

St. Clair County is located in the Appalachian foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The county is bordered by Blount County to the north, Etowah County to the west, Talladega County to the south, and Cherokee County to the east. The county covers an area of 576 square miles, of which 571 square miles is land and 5 square miles is water. The terrain is mostly hilly, with the highest point being Cheaha Mountain, which has an elevation of 2,407 feet. The county is drained by the Coosa River, which forms the eastern border of the county.

Climate

St. Clair County has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64°F, and the average annual precipitation is 52 inches.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 83,593 people, 32,845 households, and 23,845 families residing in the county. The population density was 146 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 87.3% White, 9.3% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. 2.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The median income for a household in the county was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. The per capita income for the county was $20,945. About 11.3% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.

Economy

St. Clair County’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The county’s largest employers are Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, which produces automobiles, and the St. Clair County School System. Other major employers include the St. Clair County Commission, the City of Pell City, and the St. Clair County Health Department.
Agriculture is also an important part of the county’s economy. The county’s main agricultural products are poultry, cattle, hay, corn, soybeans, and cotton.

History

St. Clair County was established in 1818 and named after General Arthur St. Clair, a Revolutionary War hero. The county was originally part of the Cherokee Nation, but was ceded to the United States in 1835. The county seat was originally located in Springville, but was moved to Ashville in 1836.
The county was largely rural until the 1950s, when the construction of the Coosa River Dam and the completion of Interstate 20 brought new industry and population growth to the area. The county’s population has continued to grow since then, and the county is now home to several large manufacturing plants.
