Etowah County is located in the northeastern corner of the state of Alabama in the United States. It is bordered by Cherokee County to the north, DeKalb County to the east, Calhoun County to the south, and Marshall and Blount Counties to the west. The county seat is Gadsden, which is also the largest city in the county. As of the 2010 census, the population of Etowah County was 104,430, making it the fifth most populous county in the state.
Geography
Etowah County covers an area of 576 square miles, making it the fourth largest county in Alabama by area. The terrain is mostly hilly, with the highest point being Lookout Mountain at 1,972 feet. The county is drained by the Coosa River, which forms its eastern border. The county is also home to several lakes, including Lake Guntersville, Lake Neely Henry, and Lake Gadsden.
History
Etowah County was created in 1866 from parts of DeKalb and Marshall Counties. It was named for the Etowah River, which flows through the county. The county seat was originally located in Gadsden, which was founded in 1867.
