Alabaster Summary
Alabaster, Alabama is a city located in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. It is a suburb of Birmingham and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Alabaster was 30,352.
Geography
Alabaster is located at 33°14'45" North, 86°49'45" West (33.245833, -86.829167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
History
Alabaster was founded in 1819 and was originally known as "Cahawba," after the nearby Cahaba River. The name was changed to Alabaster in 1887, after the local gypsum deposits. The city was incorporated in 1953.
Economy
Alabaster is home to several large employers, including Thompson Tractor Company, a Caterpillar dealership, and the Shelby County Board of Education. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 30,352 people, 11,845 households, and 8,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,890.3 people per square mile (730.2/km2). There were 12,717 housing units at an average density of 790.2 per square mile (305.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 15.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 11,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $62,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $31,945 for females.
