Smoke Rise Summary

Smoke Rise is an unincorporated community located in the northeastern corner of Jefferson County, Alabama. It is situated on the banks of the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River, and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is named for the smoke that rises from the nearby coal mines.

History

The area that is now Smoke Rise was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from the Appalachian Mountains. The settlers were mostly of English and Scottish descent, and they established small farms and homesteads in the area. The community was originally known as "Smokey Hill," and the name was changed to Smoke Rise in the late 1800s.
The area was largely rural until the early 1900s, when coal mining began to take off in the area. The coal mines brought jobs and economic growth to the area, and the population began to grow. The community was officially established in the 1920s, and the first post office was established in 1925.

It is situated on the banks of the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River, and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is named for the smoke that rises from the nearby coal mines, and the economy is largely based on coal mining.
