Mount Olive was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from the Carolinas and Georgia. The town was named after the nearby Mount Olive Baptist Church, which was established in 1820. The church was named after the biblical Mount of Olives, which is located in Jerusalem.

The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.45% White, 19.17% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
