Introduction

Mount Olive is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Coosa County, Alabama. It is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Talladega National Forest. The population of Mount Olive was 1,845 at the 2010 census. The CDP is located in the northern part of the county, approximately 10 miles south of the county seat of Rockford.

History

Mount Olive was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from the Carolinas and Georgia. The town was named after the nearby Mount Olive Church, which was established in 1820. The church was named after the biblical Mount of Olives, which is located in Jerusalem.
The town was incorporated in 1887 and was the first incorporated town in Coosa County. The town was a center of commerce and industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several sawmills, gristmills, and a cotton gin.
The town was also home to several schools, including Mount Olive Academy, which was established in 1891. The school was a private school for African-American students. The school closed in the 1950s due to the desegregation of public schools.

Geography

Mount Olive is located at 33°45'25" North, 86°17'45" West (33.756944, -86.295833). The CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land.
The town is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Talladega National Forest. The town is located approximately 10 miles south of the county seat of Rockford.

Economy

The economy of Mount Olive is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The town is home to several farms and timber companies. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 441.2 people per square mile. There were 845 housing units at an average density of 202.2 per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
