Delta Summary

Delta is a city located in the state of Alabama, in the United States of America. It is located in the northwest corner of the state, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The city is situated on the banks of the Tombigbee River, and is part of the Mobile metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Delta was 1,845.

Geography

Delta is located at 31°45'25" North, 88°2'25" West (31.756944, -88.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

History

Delta was founded in 1819 by settlers from Georgia and Tennessee. The city was named after the Greek letter Delta, which is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet. The city was incorporated in 1821.
Delta was an important port city during the 19th century, and was a major center for the cotton trade. The city was also a major stop on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad.

Economy

Delta's economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The city is home to several large timber companies, and is a major producer of timber products. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a furniture factory.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 830.9 people per square mile (321.7/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 382.2 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 18.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
