Citronelle Summary
Citronelle is a city located in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Mobile metropolitan statistical area. The population was 2,775 at the 2010 census.
History
Citronelle was founded in 1822 by French settlers who named it after the French word for lemon tree, citronelle. The town was incorporated in 1891.
In the late 19th century, Citronelle was a major center for the production of turpentine and naval stores. The town was also home to a large sawmill and a cotton gin.

Economy
Citronelle's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms, including a large poultry farm. Citronelle is also home to several small businesses, including a lumber yard, a feed store, and a hardware store.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 690.3 people per square mile (266.7/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 285.2 per square mile (110.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 29.90% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945.
