Union is a town located in Monroe County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monroe County.

History

Union was founded in 1817 and named for the union of the states It was incorporated in 1832

The town was the site of the Battle of Union, a Civil War battle fought on May 23, 1862. Union was the site of the first Confederate victory in the state of West Virginia.

Economy

Union is a small town with a limited economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few small manufacturing plants.

The town is also home to the Monroe County Fair which is held annually in August

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,039.4 people per square mile (788.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 899.4 per square mile (347.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,000, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $27,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,000. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
