Tornado Summary

Tornado, West Virginia is a small unincorporated community located in Putnam County, West Virginia. It is situated along the Kanawha River, approximately 10 miles east of Charleston, the state capital. The population of Tornado was estimated to be around 1,000 in 2020.

History

Tornado was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of settlers from Virginia. The town was originally known as “Tornado’s Bottom” due to the frequent tornadoes that occurred in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1891 and was named after the nearby Tornado Creek.
