New Martinsville Summary

New Martinsville is a city located in Wetzel County, West Virginia, United States. It is the county seat of Wetzel County and is located along the Ohio River. The population was 5,366 at the 2010 census.

History

New Martinsville was founded in 1839 by William Martin, a local landowner. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1845. The town was originally a trading post and ferry crossing on the Ohio River. In 1852, the town was connected to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which helped to spur its growth.
In the late 19th century, New Martinsville became a center of oil and natural gas production. The town was also home to several glass factories, which produced a variety of glassware.

New Martinsville is located at 39°37′N 80°48′W (39.619, -80.800). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), of which 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

New Martinsville’s economy is largely based on the oil and natural gas industry. The city is home to several oil and gas companies, including Chesapeake Energy, Antero Resources, and EQT Corporation. As of the 2010 census, there were 5,366 people, 2,093 households, and 1,372 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,521.2 people per square mile (973.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
