New Cumberland Summary
New Cumberland is a city located in Hancock County, West Virginia, United States. It is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 30 miles west of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census.
History
New Cumberland was founded in 1814 by a group of settlers from Cumberland, Maryland. The town was originally known as “Cumberland”, but the name was changed to “New Cumberland” in 1817 to avoid confusion with the Maryland town. The town was incorporated in 1837.
The town was an important port on the Ohio River during the 19th century. It was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, and was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1862.
Geography
New Cumberland is located at 40°33′17″N 80°37′45″W (40.554722, -80.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
New Cumberland’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and services. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,569 people, 1,093 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,097.5 people per square mile (808.7/km2). There were 1,193 housing units at an average density of 990.8 per square mile (382.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,845.
