Monongah Summary

Monongah, West Virginia is a small town located in Marion County, West Virginia. It is situated along the Monongahela River, approximately 30 miles south of Morgantown. The town was founded in 1883 and was named after the Monongahela River. The population of Monongah was 1,044 at the 2010 census.

History

Monongah was founded in 1883 by the Monongahela Coal and Coke Company. The company was formed to exploit the coal reserves in the area. The town was named after the Monongahela River, which runs through the town. The town was originally a coal mining town, and the coal industry was the main source of employment for the residents.
In 1907, a major mining disaster occurred in Monongah. Monongah is located at 39°25'45"N 80°14'45"W (39.4292, -80.2458). The town is situated along the Monongahela River, approximately 30 miles south of Morgantown. The town has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land.
