Clendenin Summary
Clendenin is a town located in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. It is situated along the Elk River, approximately 25 miles northeast of Charleston, the state capital. The population was 1,919 at the 2010 census.
History
Clendenin was founded in 1817 by William Clendenin, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as Clendenin's Landing, and was a major port on the Elk River. It was the site of the first steamboat to travel the Elk River, the "Elk". The town was incorporated in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Clendenin was a major coal mining center. The town was home to several coal mines, including the Clendenin Coal and Coke Company, which operated from 1891 to 1921. The town was also home to the Clendenin Glass Works, which operated from 1891 to 1910.

Clendenin is located at 38°25'45" North, 81°17'45" West (38.429167, -81.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land.

Clendenin's economy is largely based on the coal mining industry. The town is home to several coal mines, including the Clendenin Coal and Coke Company, which operates a surface mine in the area. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,919 people, 790 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,594.2 people per square mile (615.3/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 741.7 per square mile (286.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 790 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
