Century Summary

Century is a small unincorporated community located in the northern part of Preston County, West Virginia. It is situated in the Appalachian Mountains, approximately 10 miles south of the Maryland border. History

Century was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of German immigrants. The community was originally known as “Centuryville”, and was named after the nearby Century Mine. The mine was opened in 1845 and was the first coal mine in the area. The mine was operated by the Century Coal Company until it closed in the early 1900s.
The community was officially incorporated in 1891, and the population grew steadily throughout the early 20th century. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a sawmill.
