St Marys Summary

St. Marys is a city located in Pleasants County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 2,817 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pleasants County.

History

St. Marys was founded in 1817 by a group of Catholic settlers from Maryland. The town was named after the Catholic Church of St. Mary's, which was built in 1820. The town was incorporated in 1851.
St. Marys was a major stop on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which ran through the town from 1853 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it provided transportation for goods and people.
The town was also home to a number of industries, including a glass factory, a brickyard, a sawmill, and a flour mill.

Geography

St. Marys is located at 39°14′N 81°17′W (39.23, -81.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
