Cheat Lake Summary
Cheat Lake is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Monongalia County, West Virginia. It is situated along the Cheat River, approximately 10 miles south of Morgantown. The population of Cheat Lake was 4,945 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Cheat Lake is located at 39°37'17" North, 79°55'45" West (39.6214, -79.9292). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all of it land.
History
Cheat Lake was first settled in the late 1700s by settlers from Pennsylvania. The area was originally known as "Cheat River Settlement" and was part of Monongalia County. The name was changed to Cheat Lake in 1891 when the lake was created by the construction of a dam on the Cheat River.
The area was primarily agricultural until the 1950s when the construction of Interstate 68 brought an influx of people and businesses to the area. The population of Cheat Lake has grown steadily since then, and the area is now a popular residential community.
Economy
Cheat Lake is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, a bank, and several restaurants. The area is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant.

Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 4,945 people, 2,072 households, and 1,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,150.3 people per square mile (444.3/km2). There were 2,232 housing units at an average density of 519.3 per square mile (200.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $41,964 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $23,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
